Ask and It Is Given by Esther and Jerry Hicks Review
“Ask and It Is Given – Learning to Manifest Your Desires” is a book written by Esther and Jerry Hicks. It was copyright in 2004 and published by Hay House, Inc. The Hicks were New York Times best-selling authors. This book was inspired by the teaching of Abraham based on the law of Attraction. I just mentioned a few names that you may or may not be familiar with. I will share more about the authors below.
There are 314 pages with two parts to the book. The first part is the theory encompassing the law of attraction and being aware of your “state of being” through the guidance of your emotion. According to the law of attraction, your “state of being” or your vibration, not your words or your actions, is the attractor. Being aware of your “state of being” helps understand better what you are attracting into your life. When you have a better understanding and being aware, you then have the choice to create what you desire into your life. The book provides soothing words and break down of simple basic understanding of how everything fits together.
The second part of the book is the practical how-to. It produces a scale of 22 emotional guidance system from high to low to use as a guide and suggests exercises and/or processes to assist you soothingly up the scale of emotions depending on where your vibrational set-point at the time.
Abraham delivers to Esther vibrations and she translates them into physical words equivalent much like radio signals. Therefore, there will be times in the book Esther will introduce certain words that may not make sense if out of context but make total sense in the book. I call it Abraham’ism.
According to the book, Abraham wants to remind us of who we really are and the things that are important for us which we may have forgotten. It is written to give us a better understanding of ourselves, where we have been, where we are going, and who we continue to be. Most of all Abraham wants us to have the awareness of who we are of our POWERFUL now. With the processes, the awareness, and understanding of the Laws of the Universe, we can achieve anything we desire.
About the Authors
Esther and Jerry Hicks wrote together at least eight books with the concept of the law of attraction. They presented over twenty (20) years of workshops up to sixty (60) cities per year including cruises. According to Wikipedia.com, Esther Weaver (Maiden name) was born in Coalville, Utah on March 5, 1948, and was married to Jerry, who was a successful Amway distributor. According to geni.com, Jerry Hicks was born on June 22, 1927, in San Diego County, CA. He has been through several marriages before he met Esther.
The couple had been together from 1978 to 2011, until Jerry passed away on Friday, November 18, 2011, because of Leukemia. Although this book was co-authored by Ether and Jerry Hicks, the writing was inspired by Abraham known as “a group of consciousness from the non-physical dimension” according to Wikipedia.com. Esther calls Abraham “infinite intelligence” and Jerry calls them “the purest form of love I’ve ever experienced”.
Esther is a translator or an interpreter of Abraham teaching through meditation or we also know it as channeling. Initially, Abraham would send “blocks of thought to Esther into our language through the typewriter, and a few months later, Esther began speaking words of the thoughts she was receiving from Abraham.” stated in the book – The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent. The Good and the Bad
In everything, there are usually the Ying and the Yang or the good and the bad. That is what makes life interesting. I sorted through the different reviews and compiled a few common good and bad comments:
Good
- Easy to understand with clear and easy to follow descriptions. Many people who can relate with this book find it positively comforting and uplifting.
- Practical applications that work. There are 22 processes with step-by-step instructions on how to raise your emotional frequency. Many people found it very helpful and effective.
- The teaching and guidance help shift perspectives. Many people stated when you let go of the strangeness or so-called “woo woo” stuff regarding the non-physical entity, the message and the guidance of the book help shift perspectives or see the same situation in a different and positive light.
Bad
- Hard to understand – There were complaints in the reviews that it was hard to understand. How can something be easy to understand under the “Good” but written again under “Bad” hard to understand? In my opinion, it depends on which state of mind the reader is in at the time of reading the book whether this book or any book. Whatever state you are in will give you that perspective therefore it may come across as hard or easy to understand. It is not wrong or right and good or bad unless you label it that way. I hope that makes sense.
- The channeling spirit concept with a non-physical entity is a little off the beaten path. Some religious readers considered it to be demonic while others who are not religious considered the concept to be far-fetched and unbelievable. It is something that cannot be proven and had very little hard evidence.
- There were complaints that the book is repetitive and therefore boring. It repeats the same concept over and over again but with different phrases or different words.
My Thoughts
I can understand that this book may be considered way out there on the left-field or also some would call it a “woo woo” concept because of the channeling of spirit or non-physical entity from a non-physical dimension. I just learned this term “woo woo” lately through reading the reviews and hearing from conversations with friends. Regardless of how strange it may be, I can appreciate the messages the book delivered. The content of the book resonates with me in many ways.
I have read it earlier in 2012 but did not get it. To be totally honest, my mind wandered while reading it. I had so much on my mind such as fear, anxiety, self-doubts, etc. I couldn’t focus on the words. I read the words but nothing sunk in. It took me several times to read this book again before I understood its message. I stopped reading and came back several years later. This time I also listened to the audio version of the book. As the book stated, “You only hear what you are ready to hear.”
I learned a lot from Ask and It Is Given and refers back to it now and then. I usually go straight to the booked marked pages – emotional guidance scale and refresh my mind with a few of the twenty-two (22) processes when I feel down or out of sync.
In general, everyone has their own value, opinions, and belief. That is what makes us so unique and special in our own way. If this concept of spirit / non-physical entity seems too weird for you, then move-on. There are so many more great self-help books that could be of better value. However, if you don’t mind, and/or curious to learn more then check this book out. When you are open to listening, you will have much more value from this book. You may notice that this concept applies to everything you do in life as well. Click here ==> “Ask and It Is Given” by Esther and Jerry Hicks”
Understanding and loving self are very important aspects of success. Self-esteem and confidence go along way. If you are a struggling entrepreneur trying to make a living online with affiliate marketing, writing books, or running an online business, I recommend for you to check out this book if you are not put off with the “woo woo” stuff OR find other inspirational materials that resonate with you. Best of luck in your spiritual journey in life.

Hi Ha,
I am also a fan of the law of attraction, so I can relate to all the points you mentioned in this article. Most of the time, it proves that we are what we think. If you think positively about everything in your daily life, the result will be all good for you. If you happen to have negative thoughts easily, things might be as bad as you think. It’s just like a mirror.
I was introduced to the law of attraction many years ago by my close friend. There was one super-popular book called “The Secret” in 2006, and I read it & started to practice every day. Since then, I care about my inner power and listen to my lousy voice & turn them into a good one with lights. Everything becomes better after many practices.
If we could use the same power for our online business, that would help us to grow a stronger mind for every obstacle along the way toward success. Some people called me “an ultimate optimist” because I think so positively that it seems nothing can beat me. So, I do hope people could practice it every day, and you will see the light soon.
Thanks for sharing,
Matt
