Wix.com is a cloud-based web development platform that provides website building (not WordPress), hosting service, and domain names. The company was first developed and founded by an Israeli company in 2006.

Wix allows users to create their own website with no coding knowledge necessary. The users have access to Wix online drag and drop tools. Similar to WordrPress, users may add plug-ins to their websites using a variety of Wix-developed and third-party applications. The plug-ins allow different functionality in the websites such as social, online, or email marketing, e-commerce, contact forms, and community forums.

The Good & the Bad

The Good:

PRO #1 It is quick, easy, and straight forward to create your own website with the Wix Drag ‘n Drop editor. You do not have to know any form of coding.
PRO #2 There are over 500 different professional templates to choose from to build your websites. They are easily customizable.
PRO #3 Wix has FREE hosting up to 500 MB storage and 1 GB bandwidth. Wix offers domain names with URL under the name of Wix.com – example: username.wixsite.com/sitename.
PRO #4 Extensive Knowledge Base Support under Wix Help Center. If you still do not find an answer, you can submit a ticket for support.

The Bad:

CON #1 With a free Wix account, you will have Wix brand ads display on your website. When you upgrade to premium the ads will disappear.
CON #2 Wix is great for small businesses and simple website structure. However, if you are looking for advanced customized website features, I find it is still limited in comparison to WordPress.
CON #3 No 24/7 Live Chat support or phone support. The Call Center Business hours are Monday through Friday from 5am to 5pm PST. Through the BBB website, most of the complaints were customer services and billing issues.

There is an extensive knowledge based support online to answer common questions. If you do not find the answers, you can also submit a ticket and receive a response via email. The call center business hours are Monday through Friday from 5am to 5pm PST.

It is free to get started with Drag ‘n Drop editor, unlimited pages, Wix brand ads, 1 GB bandwidth, and free 500 MB storage for a secure hosting site with interface support for mobile devices. You will receive a free URL address on the Wix.com domain. With a premium plan, you can use your own domain name or register with Wix for a personal domain name especially for your company.

The current price for domain purchase through Wix is $14.95 per year and per domain. If you upgrade for a yearly package price of $11/month and higher, you will receive a free domain voucher for one year. There is no extra cost for public registration. The private registration is $9.90 extra per year.

My Final Opinion of Wix.com

My overall opinion about Wix.com is similar to BBB rating of a B. The customer service and billing department have room for improvement.

I had a website account with Wix a few years ago. I found Wix Drag n’ Drop editor very easy to work with. I setup a brand new website using one of their templates within an hour. I do know a little about coding and I wanted to do some more complicated customization. However, I found it was difficult to go outside the template box offered by Wix. This account was created in 2015. Hopefully, their customization may have improved by now. I ended my premium membership because I did not pursue further on that old business.

Keep in mind that Wix has auto renewal option on the membership. I stopped working on my business in 2016 and totally forgot about my membership with Wix. I did not receive a notification for renewal or if I did, I didn’t remember. I was automatically charged for the second year. It was partially my fault for forgetting and I didn’t read the fine line that they have auto renewal in their policy.

If you do sign up, make sure to turn off the auto renewal option or know that it is always on until you turn it off. It will automatically charge the membership fee directly to your credit card with or without a notice to you. The auto renewal is under Billing & Payments.

Overall, Wix has a promising website product for small businesses. If you are a hands-on person who like to do it yourself and are fine with support via email, wix may work great for you. The price is very affordable for low budget. However, be prepare that customer support may be helpful and it may not be. My experience with customer support was fine. I didn’t have any problems. They responded and canceled my membership at a timely manner.
